This massive, muscular youth seemed to be oozing with hostility as he initiated the hour with the statement that something was happening to him and he didn't seem to be himself. Whitman wrote often in his diary about the situation, and his attempts to get help. Medical histories note debilitating headaches and complaints of rage, which those closest to him say were unnatural. The facts are clear on one point in particular: Charles Whitman knew there was something wrong in his brain. He struggled with grades, complaining of headaches and insomnia.Īfter a few semesters at UT, low grades cost him the scholarship, and he was returned to active duty as a lance corporal in North Carolina he had discipline problems and was eventually court martialed.Īfter receiving an honorable discharge, he returned to UT for school. His mother left his father and moved to Texas. He met a girl and married her after five months. The next few years were a whirlwind of emotional ups and downs. Whitman showed an aptitude for mechanical engineering so the Marines sent him to study at the University of Texas. He scored 215 of 250 possible points on marksmanship trials. Records show he joined the Marine Corps in 1959, and he excelled, garnering good reports including a Good Conduct Medal. Whitman earned 21 Boy Scout merit badges in 15 months, and earned Eagle Scout at 12 years and 3 months, the youngest scout to do so at that time. Whitman went to Catholic school, was a regular altar server, and tests at age 6 showed he had an IQ of 139, placing him in the top percentile for intelligence. Investigators and biographers agree that his father was a bully, and his home life was abusive.
